Westminster’s Brandon Martin wins ‘Prep Ballplayer of the Week’

The old adage for starting pitchers is that it’s always good to “help yourself” on the mound with a few hits at the plate. Westminster’s Brandon Martin certainly did that Saturday in the Carroll County title game.

Martin allowed just one run with six strikeouts, and also went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI single and sacrifice fly. Add it all up, and you get a 6-1 victory over Francis Scott Key and “Prep Ballplayer of the Week” honors.

Martin eclipsed Dulaney’s Matt Ellis and Atholton’s Blake James with nearly 4,000 votes and 59% of the total in our contest. Two no-hitters are tough to beat (Ellis and James each recorded one during the week of May 2 through 8), but Martin’s performance on the mound and at the plate did just that.

In case you’re visiting our ‘Prep Ballplayer’ voting for the first time, here’s how things work. Three candidates will be revealed each Monday. If you want to submit a player for consideration, send an email to dean@baltimorebaseball.com by 3 p.m. Sunday. Please provide as much detail on the player’s week as possible. Voting starts as soon as we announce the candidates, and runs until every Thursday at 11:59 p.m.
