Minor League Podcast: Alan Mills talks pitching prospects, mid-90s O’s and Darryl Strawberry

Alan Mills is one of the most popular relievers in Orioles history.

Whether it was because of the success he had in the mid-1990s, his menacing glare and Fu Manchu mustache or the punch he landed to the jaw of New York Yankee slugger Darryl Strawberry in a brawl in the Bronx, Mills forever will be a favorite among Orioles fans.

And now he has a different role, pitching coach at Double-A Bowie, tutoring prospects such as Chris Lee and David Hess.

In this week’s Minor League Podcast with Adam Pohl, Mills is the lead guest, and he chats about what it’s like to be in the minors as a coach. He breaks down some of his pitching pupils and also talks a little bit about two that have made the majors recently: Mychal Givens and Ashur Tolliver

And, of course, he reminisces about his time as an Orioles reliever and that fateful moment with Strawberry.

Pohl, who is the play-by-play voice of the Bowie Baysox, also switches gears and talks with our minor league baseball expert Dean Jones Jr., about sleepers in the organization.

Prompted by Tolliver’s slow but steady rise to the majors, Pohl and Jones each pick three players that they think may not be on the radar nationally right now, but could soon be pushing upward in the organization.

There are some pretty interesting names – including a local one.

So check it out.
