Maryland and Towson hire new head coaches

Two Division 1 baseball programs announced Thursday that they have hired new head coaches.

University of Maryland has promoted Rob Vaughn from associate head coach and Towson University has hired Matt Tyner away from his post as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at the University of Richmond.

Tyner will be taking over a program that was 20-34 this season, the last in the 30-year tenure of long-time coach Mike Gottlieb.

Tyner, 58, is a former ninth-round pick of the Orioles in 1980 and reached as high as Double-A Charlotte in the organization’s farm system. He is a Decatur, Ill., native.

Vaughn, only 29, has been with the Terps’ program since 2012 as an assistant to head coach John Szefc, who stepped down this month to take the head coaching job at Virginia Tech.

Vaughn was a 30th round pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2009 and played a couple years in that organization before entering coaching.  He was a standout catcher at Kansas State University.

The Terps won 30 or more games in each year Vaughn has been with the program. Maryland made it to the NCAA regionals again in 2017. He is a native of Humble, Texas.
