Hunter Harvey scratched from Bowie start with shoulder injury — timetable for return currently unknown

Orioles top pitching prospect Hunter Harvey, who has been limited due to injuries throughout his pro career, is dealing with a right shoulder injury and his return to the Double-A Bowie rotation is currently unknown.

Harvey, 23, was supposed to start for the Baysox today, but was scratched with “posterior shoulder instability,” according to player development director Brian Graham.

No more information was available at this time, Graham said.

Harvey is currently not with the team, according to an industry source. The hope is that the right-hander can rehab for a bit and see if that will help take away the discomfort, a source said.

Harvey, the club’s first-round pick in 2013, allowed six runs in just two innings in his last start Friday against Trenton.

He has been dealing with the discomfort since.

The extent of the shoulder injury is not known at this point, however, it is obviously a major concern for a player who has not logged many innings since 2014. He had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in July 2016.

He was 1-2 with a 5.57 ERA in nine starts with Double-A Bowie this year. His 32 1/3 innings so far this season is more than what he had pitched combined since 2014.

  • To tell you the truth I was expecting this news based on his recent starts

Hopefully rest is the diagnosis but I think this could be a major setback...hope im wrong

  • I heard some talk about the Mets maybe selling in two weeks..how bout Manny for DeGrom? Lol

  • What's sad is that these things shouldn't surprise us anymore. There has to be a Senate subcomittee meeting on this teams training/development it's out of control.

      • But the Orioles are scrupulously fastidious about physicals for trades and free agents. Yet they draft fragile goods with reckless abandon. At least some of these breakdowns must be due to anatomical flaws or poor biomechanics. Just my two cents.

  • It does’t really matter because as soon as he would get to the O’s and McDowell he’d screw him up like he has to most of the pitchers since he got here. McDowell HAS to go!
