Some of the most interesting developments within the next year or so for the Orioles concern players who are not on the current major league roster.
One of the more intriguing names is Ryan Mountcastle, the 21-year-old corner infielder whom BaltimoreBaseball.com recently named the Orioles’ No. 1 prospect in our reshuffling of our “Dean’s Dozen.”
Mountcastle, a 2015 first-rounder (36th overall), is hitting better than .300 at Double-A Bowie and it seems like a matter of when — and not if — his bat will make it to the majors. There are questions, however, as to whether the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Mountcastle sticks at third base or will be moved to first, left field or designated hitter as a major leaguer.
Mountcastle discussed his defense, his developing offensive game and the adjustments he’s making in this segment of “Minor League Podcast” with Adam Pohl, the voice of the Bowie Baysox.
It’s always intriguing to hear a young player talk about his dream of reaching the big leagues.
You’ll get some of that in this episode, but you’ll also get the other side of it. In the second part of this podcast, Pohl talks to infielder Corban Joseph, who, at 29, made it back to the majors last month with the Orioles after a five-year absence (his debut was in 2013 with the New York Yankees).
Joseph, the younger brother of Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph, played in four games with the Orioles, going 1-for-9, before being designated for assignment and taken off the 40-man roster.
Joseph cleared waivers on Sunday, however, and was outrighted back to Bowie. Before that transaction, Joseph sat down with Pohl and discussed what it was like to be back in the majors after such a long hiatus. And his attitude now that he had returned to Double-A.
These are two players in vastly different situations, but they both discuss the same dream on one podcast. It’s definitely worth your time to check it out.
