Orioles’ Alex Cobb leaves game with right groin soreness

SARASOTA, Fla.—It appears that the Orioles will have to make a major adjustment to their starting rotation. Alex Cobb, who was set to start the March 28 opener at Yankee Stadium, left Saturday’s game with the Minnesota Twins after one inning because of right groin soreness.

Cobb, who was named Opening Day starter on March 13, walked off the field with head athletic trainer Brian Ebel after the first inning and was replaced by Jimmy Yacabonis.

If Cobb is unable to make the Opening Day start, which would have been the first in his career, he could be replaced by Andrew Cashner, who is scheduled to start Sunday against Pittsburgh, or Dylan Bundy.

Bundy, who was the Opening Day starter a year ago, is slated to start the final Grapefruit League game on Monday against the New York Mets.

Cobb was scheduled to start the Tampa Bay Rays’ opener in 2015 but a forearm injury prevented the 31-year-old right-hander from making the start. The forearm injury led to Tommy John surgery.

The Orioles could open the season with four players on the injured list: Cobb; designated hitter Mark Trumbo, whose recovery from right knee surgery has been slow; catcher Austin Wynns, who has been sidelined by a sore left oblique muscle; and third baseman Renato Nunez, who has a sore right biceps.
