BALTIMORE—The Orioles had 12 games remaining going into Tuesday night’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays. They used their 17th different starter, Chandler Shepherd.
Manager Brandon Hyde will use Dylan Bundy, John Means and Asher Wojciechowski twice each down the stretch.
“For the other guys, we’re playing it series-by-series.” Hyde said. “We’ll figure it out as one series ends and the next one begins.”
Bundy will pitch Wednesday, and it’s possible Aaron Brooks will pitch Thursday.
If Shepherd pitches well in his first start, perhaps he’ll get another.
“Had a couple of nice relief appearances for us,” Hyde said. “Been a starter in Triple-A. Give him an opportunity to start, and see what he can do.”
Gabriel Ynoa also could get an additional start or two.
Injury update: Mark Trumbo, who was scratched from Monday’s game in Detroit with a back strain, is doing better, Hyde said.
“Trumbo feels a lot better,” Hyde said. “He’s available to come off the bench to get a big hit tonight, if necessary.”
Renato Nunez, who was hit in the left hand by a pitch Monday, is day-to-day. Hyde said Nunez is sore.
No Hanhold: The Orioles claimed right-handed pitcher Eric Hanhold on waivers from the New York Mets Monday. However, Hanhold, a 25-year-old right-hander who pitched in three games for the Mets in 2018 but spent the entire season in the minors, won’t be joining the Orioles this season.
“We’re not going to bring him out here the last couple of weeks,” Hyde said. “Hopefully see him in spring training.”
To make room for Hanhold on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated left-handed pitcher Ty Blach for assignment. Blach was 1-3 with an 11.32 ERA in five starts for the Orioles.
Britton joins Orioles: Bowie Baysox manager Buck Britton has joined the Orioles for the final 12 games. Norfolk Tides manager Gary Kendall was with the Orioles for the previous 11 games.
Britton and Kendall’s titles are guest coaches.
Hyde likes having the minor league managers on his staff.
“It was great spending a couple of weeks with Gary,” Hyde said. “And now we spend a couple of weeks with Buck. It’s something that I got to experience when I was managing in the minor leagues with the Marlins. They brought me in September.”
Britton’s Baysox made it to the Eastern League Championship Series, losing a best-of-five series, 3-1, to the Trenton Thunder.
“You can watch the game all you want on TV,” Hyde said. “Until you’re in the dugout and see the speed of the game up here and see how our coaching staff works … Today we’re having a pre-series meeting, and he’s going to be involved in that.
“All those types of things is just great experience and really valuable for Gary and for Buck and going into next year with an idea of how we do things up here. They’ll get a nice feel of what it’s like to be involved with the coaching staff in the big leagues and watching a big league baseball game in the dugout.”

We got Tyler Herb for Yaz. As for Davis, suspect that was discussed with the Angelos brothers at the job interview. Angelos’s probably will have to approve the release. Guessing off-season 2020. At that point the money owed on the contract will be less than the deferred money
Over the last several days it's been written that Elias has met w Davis and (my interpretation only) "laid down the law" with him and have given him a very specific off-season training program for him to follow to improve his hitting. If/when it shows that he continues to be the feckless hitter that he is, I believe they will cut him then.
Hopefully he does turn things around. If not, I find it hard to imagine that they will stick with him through the whole 2020 season.
Yes, they need better pitching, but they also need to give playing time to Mouncastle, Mancini and others much more deserving than Davis...

His presence on the roster puts Mancini in the outfield and a sure out when he plays. I guess you feel we can play with 8 guys cause our pitching won’t keep us in games anyway.

No GM- especially a first time GM working for the historically meddlesome Angelos family-is going to release a Chris Davis without at least tacit approval from their bosses. Elias has plenty of issues to occupy his time-hiring scouts, minor league coaches, next years draft, the international market, etc. Doubt that Chris Davis is more than a minor annoyance to him-like a pebble in a shoe. Once Hays and Diaz can stay healthy, as soon as they figure out what position Mountcastle plays, once they have a semblance of a major league pitching staff, then there becomes a bigger sense of urgency to resolve Davis’s status. off topic comment but it makes me sick to see mike yastrzemski having a really nice year for giants and that he was never given 1 opportunity with this organization but yet a guy like Mason Williams gets a call up his 1st yr. Plus why call up austin hays to see what he has for next yr if your not gonna play the guy everyday. I'm sick of seeing him pinch hit. he and dj stewart should be starting everyday
Mason Williams is 28 years old and was signed as a minor league free agent early in the year. If he hadn’t been called up in September, he would have been a minor league free agent in the off-season. This way the Orioles get to see if he is worth keeping around. As for Yaz, he was exposed in the Rule 5 draft 3 years in a row, and no one took a flyer on him. Alberto was waived 4 times this off-season, including the Orioles and he’s having a great season. Wish Yaz and Alberto well, but let’s see what they do next year before we make judgments on them
Mike Yastrzemski as a 28 year old in Double A did posted a .750 OPS. Sometimes a guy has to go somewhere else. I don’t think it’s sustainable at all for him but the Giants threw everything at the wall in their OF this year. Rangers fans could be huffing and puffing about Alberto, but that’s just baseball. Some guys are going to be productive for other teams. If Yaz was younger and a consistently productive minor leaguer I could probably hear an argument for why it sucked to let him go. But he wasn’t. He wasn’t productive in Double A at 28 years old.....
Go ahead and pick me a non prospect minor league vet out of our minors right now who you think can play. It’s just not that easy......
