Rutschman goes 2-for-4 in Triple-A debut; Zimmermann, Bradish, Bautista combine for 1-hitter

Adley Rutschman was 2-for-4 in his first game with Triple-A Norfolk as the Tides defeated Memphis, 4-0, on Tuesday night.

Rutschman, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft, grounded out to second and flied to right in his first two at-bats before a run-scoring single in the sixth and a double in the eighth.

Rutschman, who was promoted from Double-A Bowie on Sunday night, scored Norfolk’s fourth run on second baseman Jahmai Jones’ single.

Bruce Zimmermann, who was making his third rehab start, threw five hitless innings, walking two and striking out one.

Kyle Bradish pitched three innings, allowing a single with two outs in the eighth to Alec Burleson.

Felix Bautista pitched a scoreless ninth, but he allowed a walk and hit a batter.

  • Always interested when I see a name I recognize. Any idea if Alec Burleson is related to Rick “Rooster” Butkeson?

  • Update! Akin is now, officially another DDDD draft BUST! Hey, Elias, Zimmermann is more than ready, he could have pitched tonight instead of Akin, good move!!!

  • Are we ready to officially admit the Akin is NOT A MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER? Another disaster! 6 runs in the first three innings! He may not even be good enough for Aberdeen. Be gone with him! AND… If anyone wanted to waste the time to go back to when he was first called up I warned that HE WAS NOT THE ANSWER… that, at best, he was wildly inconsistent. Well, now he’s found consistency… as a bona fide bust!

And while I’m on my rant… Stewart is another one I warned everybody about. He wasn’t worthy of being promoted from Aberdeen (A short… .218), to Delmarva (A full… .230), to Frederick (A advanced etc, etc, etc). It was ONLY because he was a first round pick, not because he proved he deserved it. He’s proved he can’t hit and he sure isn’t a ML fielder. I, for one, am tired of his ineptness. He’s had enough chances!

    … just saying…

    • Not sure what's wrong with him this year, but DJ can hit a little bit, although I have to admit, watching him whiff on multiple 92mph center-cut fastballs in the 2nd or 3rd shakes my confidence in that statement.

  • Ok, so, I should certainly know by now not to get too excited about 2 great outings, but what do we know about Diplan? He’s pitched 3.2 perfect innings, his FB is around 94-95, change is 10 MPH slower and his curve is close to 10 MPH slower than the change. The main thing for me is he’s attacking, throwing strikes. Tonite 14 of 22 pitches were strikes. So…… again I ask, how’d O’s end up with him? I also know 2 outings is just that, 2 outings, but damn.

    • Hey Lightyear, is garbage your favorite way to describe someone you don’t like, have no problem with DFAing Plutko, garbage, seriously...go O’s...

    • Hopefully he’s only critiquing their athletic ability, and not their intrinsic human, moral value. Rather broad brush strokes, But thats the way I’m taking it.

    • Wouldn't that nasty adjective be better suited to child molesters and such? C'mon guy, they're just young men trying to make a living playing a game.

  • Akin seems to do much better as a reliever. Maybe move him into that role. Rutschman., Zimmerman, Bradish, Bautista will all be in the bigs soon. Orioles are testing out players. Not a year to lose your mind over the big league team. Enjoy some individual performances and minor league players, and see where the Os are next year. Btw, with another top four draft pick, and a bunch of potential standouts coming up through rookie ball.

    • After Rutschman caught Zim tonight, showing what the possibility is in Balmer, too bad he won’t have Adley to catch when he pitches next...go O’s...
