Trey Mancini is going to miss his second straight game because of a calf injury he sustained when he hit a foul ball off his left leg. He will be joined on the bench by outfielders Anthony Santander, who is still bothered by ankle sorness, and DJ Stewart, who has knee soreness.
“Santander’s ankle was pretty sore after the game last night,” said manager Brandon Hyde, whose team lost its 13th consecutive game, 10-0 to Tampa Bay. “So I wanted to give him a day off regardless if Trey was a go. We’re going to give Trey an extra day. He may be available off the bench. His upper calf is still pretty sore, and DJ Stewart’s got a little bit of knee soreness, so wanted to give him a day off, too.”
Tropicana Field is known for its hard playing surface. “On this turf, it’s tough,” Hyde said. “More of a necessity.”
Hyde said Mancini could play if needed.
“I think that if we’re in a pennant race, he’s in the lineup,” Hyde said. “With our situation, I want him to play healthy. I don’t want him to risk anything where he might risk a week because I pushed him out there. With our record, I think the right thing to do was not have him start. Hopefully, he’s better tomorrow and possibly have him come off the bench in a big spot.”
Jorge Mateo will play left field — with Cedric Mullins in center and Austin Hays in right. Austin Wynns will be the catcher, with Pedro Severino serving as the designated hitter.
The Orioles are playing with a three-man bench. When first baseman/designated hitter Ryan Mountcastle was activated from the injured list on Tuesday, they optioned outfielder Ryan McKenna to Triple-A Norfolk.
Mateo has started four games in left field in the last two years. He also played center and right field for San Diego.
“We did some stuff with him yesterday because of this reason,” Hyde said. “He is comfortable. He played a lot in San Diego, was a defensive replacement a lot of times for the Padres. He told me he feels comfortable at all three spots. He’s such a great athlete.
“My concern was the roof here, the dome. He’s never played [the outfield] here before. We wanted to make sure he saw the balls up in the air yesterday pregame, and he’ll do the same today.”
Orioles add pitcher: The Orioles claimed right-handed pitcher Zack Burdi on waivers from the Chicago White Sox. Burdi, who was the White Sox’s first-round draft choice in 2016, had a 6.00 ERA in six appearances for Chicago this season. In 14 appearances in the last two seasons, the 26-year-old right-hander was 0-1 with an 8.27 ERA for Chicago.
Burdi was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles designated left-hander Ryan Hartman for assignment to make room for Burdi on the 40-man roster.
Hartman, who was claimed on waivers from Houston on July 30th, didn’t pitch for the Orioles and allowed four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings in two appearances for Norfolk.
Notes: Left-handed pitcher Ty Blach, who started five games for the Orioles in 2019 and had a 1-3 record with an 11.32 ERA, is rehabbing at Low-A Delmarva. Blach, who underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2020 after suffering an injury at summer camp, was re-signed by the Orioles on March 22nd. Blach threw seven innings in six games in the Florida Complex League, allowing just two hits and an unearned run. … Right-hander Marcos Diplan, who allowed an unearned run on Tuesday night, became the 10th pitcher in team history to not allow an earned run in his first five appearances. Donnie Hart was the last to do it in 2016.

Burdi sounds like he fits in perfect...this season REALLY hurts...go O’s...
No place inva rebuilding team's organization for Blaaaaaach! Downright foolish!
"If we're in a pennant race": I can't believe I just read that. Where's Jim Mora when you need him?
LOL!!! "D'OH"
Another waiver wire (untradeable) pitcher. When will this joke end? He only has an 8.27 ERA for the White Sox. Why don't the O's just hire the Rays GM and our problems would be solved or at least we'll be rid of Genius1.WHAT A MESS!
Genius 1 is not working, to say the least. He's now doing what DDDD liked to do, pick up former 1st round draft choices, who have been busts, hoping to catch lightening in a bottle!
Elias couldn’t hold Duquette’s jock when it comes to finding arms. Cobb, Cashner and Ubaldo look pretty good compared to what Elias presents us. And don’t tell me about the $$. There’s a price to doing business.
DD's signings, Cobb, Cashner, and Ubaldo cost the Orioles about $120 million ... Elias has a payroll of $9 million for an entire 14 man pitching staff.
Like I said ..don't bother to tell me about the money. But while you are, you're not exactly being honest when you compare that $9 million figure to the 120 million. You're comparing total contract money for 3 major league pitchers to vs. a single years figure for a bunch of bushers.
And remember day one of Elias ....he has total autonomy controlling the franchise. That's what he told us. I'm holding him to his word
He hasn't found one decent pitcher outside the organization in 3 years. That is an irrefutable fact.
Daniel Cabrera, Tanner Scott, Zack Burdi. Still looking for that pitcher who throws in the upper 90s and can find the plate more often than not.
Isn’t Hunter Harvey back soon?
Insert “inhale deeply and hold breath sound” here….
Have to say it one more time, Boog. Thanks, Mikey, for hanging on to Fry. Hope birthday #80 was good!
Hallelujah! We are below the Diamondbacks! We need to keep it going. We are leading the Elijah Green sweepstakes. Do NOT WIN a few meaningless games now and lose out on Green. He’s a generational talent. We are doing things perfectly!
I wouldn’t be surprised if they go below slot, hope they don’t, probably will...go O’s...
