Orioles place Urias on injured list, designate Valdez for assignment, add Jones, Wade

PHILADELPHIA—The Orioles placed infielder Ramón Urias on the 10-day injured list because of a right adductor strain, an upper leg injury he’s had for the past few weeks.

The Orioles also designated right-handed pitcher César Valdez for assignment. Valdez gave up a game-winning, two-run triple to J.T. Realmuto in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday night that gave the Phillies a 3-2 victory.

The Orioles recalled infielder Jahmai Jones and right-handed pitcher Konner Wade from Triple-A Norfolk to replace Urias and Valdez on the roster.

The Orioles also optioned right-handed pitcher Joey Krehbiel to Norfolk. Krehbiel was claimed on waivers from Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Before the moves were made, manager Brandon Hyde said that the Orioles were waiting to make decisions on Urías, who pinch-hit in Tuesday night’s game, pitcher Chris Ellis, who was supposed to start on Tuesday but didn’t because of right arm fatigue, and outfielder Anthony Santander. Hyde said Santander tweaked his left hamstring chasing Realmuto’s game-winning hit but that the Orioles didn’t think he needed to go on the injured list.

Urías is eligible to come off the injured list and play in the final two games of the season in Toronto on October 2nd and 3rd. He’s hitting .279 with seven home runs and 38 RBIs in 85 games with a .774 OPS.

Jones, who scored the winning run in the Orioles’ 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on September 16th, was optioned to Norfolk after the game. He’s batting .164 with three RBIs in 18 games for the Orioles.

Wade has an 11.42 ERA in five games with the Orioles. Valdez, whose contract was purchased before Tuesday’s game, was 2-2 with a 5.87 ERA in 39 games.

  • Love my orioles but why in hell was jones sent to the minors, give him the time in the majors to learn his craft. Unbelievable

  • The “Doomsday Squad” does it again! Akin goes 5.1 innings without giving up a run
and, in a typical Hyde move he brings in one of Mikey’s dumpster pick-ups, Hanhold, and, boom, we’re down a run. THANK GOD IT’S ALMOST OVER!

  • GR proved he’s human tonite at Bowie. One bad game doesn’t change my opinion of him. Looking forward to seeing him pitching to AR hopefully sometime next year at OPACY.

  • Excuse me- you made a punctuation error, and said Wade had 11.42 ERA. Must have put decimal point wrong and meant 1.42, because no GM would promote a pitcher with 11.42 Era to majors! Unless he’s involved in a RICO scheme to throw games! Oh wait .. this isn’t a major team- it’s the Orioles!!!
