Bowie Baysox, Frederick Keys are sold

The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Orioles since 1993, and the Frederick Keys, a longtime affiliate now a part of the Major League Baseball Draft League, were sold to Attain Sports and Entertainment by Ken Young.

The transfer of the teams took place on January 1st, an announcement by Attain said.

Greg Baroni, CEO and principal general partner of Attain, and Richard Roberts, president and general partner, made the announcement. Baroni is a longtime Maryland resident

The Baysox signed a 10-year renewal with the Orioles that began with the 2021 season.

Frederick was an Orioles affiliate from 1990-2019. When major league teams were forced to drop an affiliate last year, the Orioles chose not to renew their contract with the Keys.

  • Any particular reason for the sale happening? I recall that there was a group that bought up a bunch of minor league teams and wondered if this is the start of a trend.

  • Finally some good news from the world of baseball. Hopefully a new ownership team can lure a real minor league team to return to Frederick. The Frederick fans always supported the Keys and I hope we get the opportunity again. It was always special to see their players when they moved up to the O's but it'll be ok to have an affiliate from another team. I've been an O's fan for nearly 60 years but hey, I'm flexible.
