BALTIMORE—Pitcher Jordan Lyles was scratched from Sunday’s start against the Tampa Bay Rays because of a stomach virus, said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde.
“He got sick overnight,” Hyde said. “It will be a bullpen day.”
Lyles, who is 4-5 with a 5.13 earned-run average in 13 starts, will be replaced by Austin Voth, whom the Orioles claimed on waivers from the Nationals on June 7th. Hyde expects to use his bullpen behind Voth.
“I can use a lot of bullpen guys today with a day off tomorrow,” Hyde said.
Voth, who has a 5.40 ERA in three games with the Orioles, started 22 times for the Nationals, most recently a two-inning spot start on June 6th, 2021. On August 8th, 2020, Voth started against the Orioles at Nationals Park, allowing just one hit in five scoreless innings.
Notes: Trey Mancini is not in the starting lineup because he’s resting his sore right hand. Mancini was hit by a pitch on Monday night … Hyde said he’s not sure when the team will decide on the pitcher they’ll have to cut. After Sunday, teams will be limited to 13 pitchers. The Orioles have 14.
