The Orioles have acquired left-hander Daniel Coulombe from the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations. The 33-year-old is 9-6 with a 3.92 ERA in 192 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland and Minnesota in eight seasons.
Last season, Coulombe had a 1.46 ERA in 10 games with the Twins.
He gives the Orioles a third left-hander in the bullpen along with Keegan Akin and Cionel Pérez. Besides short men Bryan Baker and Félix Bautista, the Orioles have Austin Voth as a long man.
Right-handers Dillon Tate and Mychal Givens are expected to begin the season on the 10-day injured list.
According to a report in the Boston Globe which was confirmed by multiple industry sources, the Orioles have asked waivers on Rule 5 draft choice Andrew Politi, who had a 6.23 ERA in nine Grapefruit League games. Presuming no further additions, the Orioles would choose two more from three right-handers remaining on the spring training roster — Mike Baumann, Logan Gillaspie and Joey Krehbiel.
The 26-man roster must be set at noon on Thursday. The Orioles open the season at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
