WASHINGTON—Logan Gillaspie was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after Tuesday night’s game to make room for Wednesday’s starter, Kyle Bradish, who was activated from the 15-day injured list and will pitch against the Washington Nationals.
Gillaspie was 0-1 with a 7.20 earned-run average in eight appearances for the Orioles.
“Logan had a lot of appearances for us,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “He was [warming] up quite a few times in games that he didn’t pitch in. We’re making roster moves all season long, obviously. These things happen just from availability and injury. Logan’s going to go down and be ready to come up whenever his name is called.”
Givens, Tate ready for rehab: Relief pitchers Mychal Givens, who’s on the 15-day injured list because of left knee inflammation, and Dillon Tate, who’s on the 15-day injured list because of a forearm injury, are nearing rehab assignments, Hyde said.
Givens pitched during Grapefruit League games, but Tate’s injury prevented him from pitching then.
“Hopefully, both of those guys are going to go out at some point next week for rehab assignments,” Hyde said. “It’s going to be pretty similar [timelines]. It’s all going to depend on how they feel. We’re hoping to get them out of Sarasota some time next week.”
Pitchers are allowed 30 days for rehab assignments.
Akin happy with fatherhood: Relief pitcher Keegan Akin rejoined the Orioles on Tuesday. He’s the father of a newborn baby boy, Karson.
“I told him he gets 15 percent stronger once you have a child,” Hyde said. “Dad strength, so I’m expecting him to come out and throw about 98 next time out.”
Minor league update: Leftfielder Donta’ Williams drove in four runs, centerfielder Zach Watson homered and drove in three runs and designated hitter Coby Mayo homered as Double-A Bowie beat Altoona, 9-3.
Connor Gillispie (1-0) allowed one run on three hits in four innings.
Rightfielder Douglas Hodo drove in three runs, shortstop Jackson Holliday had two hits and raised his average to .385 as Single-A Delmarva beat Fredericksburg, 7-4.
