Orioles acquire catcher Luis Torrens from Cubs, Krehbiel designated for assignment; Bautista wins monthly top reliever award

The Orioles acquired catcher Luis Torrens from the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations on Wednesday. Torrens, who turned 27 on Tuesday, was hitting .250 with three RBIs in 13 games for the Cubs this season.

Torrens is a lifetime .229 hitter in six major league seasons with San Diego, Seattle and Chicago. His best year was in 2021 when he hit .243 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs in 108 games for the Mariners.

He has thrown out 22 percent of runners attempting to steal.

He has not yet reported to the Orioles, who have James McCann as a backup to Adley Rutschman. At Triple-A Norfolk, they have Anthony Bemboom, who began the season with the Orioles while McCann was on the injured list because of an oblique injury, Mark Kolozsvary and Maverick Handley.

To make room for Torrens on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Joey Krehbiel was designated for assignment.

Krehbiel, who was 5-5 with a 3.90 ERA and a save for the Orioles in 2022, had a 2.00 ERA in nine games with Norfolk this season.

Bautista AL Reliever of the Month: Félix Bautista was voted American League Reliever of the Month for April.

Bautista was 2-1 with seven saves and a 1.42 ERA in 14 appearances. He has struck out 25 of his 58 batters, and his 16.46 strikeouts per nine innings lead all major league pitchers who’ve thrown at least 13 innings.
