CHICAGO—The Orioles placed backup catcher James McCann on the 10-day injured list because of a sprained left ankle. McCann injured the ankle sliding into first base legging out a single in the second inning of Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Cubs.
“We’re hoping it’s just the 10 days,” manager Brandon Hyde said. Hyde said that after McCann sustained the sprain, he remained in the game because with Adley Rutschman in the game as the designated hitter, the Orioles would have played short-handed.
Hyde pinch-hit for McCann in the sixth.
“He went back there and caught a couple of innings with the sprain, so hats off to him. Shows you what kind of competitor and teammate he is,” Hyde said.
José Godoy, who was on the taxi squad and traveling with the team, had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk. Godoy hit .123 with four RBIs in 26 games with Seattle, Minnesota and Pittsburgh in 2021 and 2022.
“Bounced around a little bit. Caught some major league games, a guy that at least has gone back there in the big leagues, left-handed bat. That’s helpful,” Hyde said.
The Orioles purchased Godoy’s contract from the New York Yankees on June 2nd. He was hitting .286 with a home run and three RBIs in seven games with Norfolk.
“We’re going to get through today, and then we have an offday [on Monday], and we’ll kind of figure some things out as we go along,” Hyde said.
McCann is batting .194 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 31 games. He was on the 10-day injured list to begin the season because of a left oblique injury.
To make room for Godoy on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated right-handed pitcher Reed Garrett for assignment.
Notes: Hyde said there was no update on first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who’s on the 10-day injured list with vertigo. He also said it was not likely that relief pitcher Mychal Givens, who threw a scoreless inning for Norfolk, would join the team on Tuesday at Tampa Bay. He’s on the 15-day injured list because of right shoulder inflammation.
