After appearing in the Saturday’s Futures Game in Seattle, baseball’s No. 1 prospect, shortstop Jackson Holliday, will begin the second half of the season at Double-A Bowie.
The Orioles are also promoting two other highly rated prospects — infielder Coby Mayo and starting pitcher Chayce McDermott from Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk.
The moves were first reported by MASNsports.com and confirmed by an industry source.
It will be the third minor league level this year for the 19-year-old Holliday, who was drafted first overall in last year’s draft. After hitting .396 with two home runs and 16 RBIs and a 1.183 OPS in 14 games at Single-A Delmarva, Holliday hit .314 with five homers and 35 RBIs and a .940 OPS in 57 games at High-A Aberdeen.
Bowie will return to action on Friday against Akron at Prince George’s Stadium.
Mayo, MLB Pipeline’s 76th-ranked prospect and its seventh-rated Orioles prospect, hit .307 with 17 homers and 44 RBIs and a 1.027 OPS in 78 games for the Baysox. The 21-year-old played at third base and first. He was the Orioles’ fourth-round pick in 2020.
McDermott, 24, the team’s 17th-rated prospect, was acquired from Houston in the Trey Mancini trade last August. He was 5-6 with a 3.56 earned-run average in 16 games for Bowie.
Mayo and McDermott will join the Tides on Friday when they host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
