Mike Elias, Brandon Hyde and Gunnar Henderson each won awards from The Sporting News. The awards, which were voted on by their peers, were: Elias for Major League Executive of the Year, Hyde for American League Manager of the Year, and Henderson for American League Rookie of the Year.
Elias, who was hired as the Orioles’ executive vice president/general manager in November 2018, has assembled the top minor league system in baseball, drafted Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Jordan Westburg, Heston Kjerstad and Colton Cowser, all of whom played in the majors in 2023.
The Orioles’ overall top pick in 2022, shortstop Jackson Holliday, is expected to debut in 2024.
Hyde won the award for the second year in a row as the Orioles recorded 101 wins, their most since 1979, and captured their first American League East title since 2014. He was recognized a year ago for guiding the Orioles to a 31-game improvement from 52 to 83 wins and another 18-game improvement this year.
Hyde did not win the Baseball Writers’ Association of America Manager of the Year award in 2022, but he’s the favorite for the award, which will be announced next month.
Henderson hit .255 with 28 home runs and 82 RBIs and an .814 OPS. He had a 6.3 WAR (Wins Above Replacement). Henderson started 68 games at third base and 64 at shortstop. He finished far ahead of Boston’s Triston Casas.
He’s the favorite to win the BBWAA award, which will be announced on November 13th.
