BALTIMORE—After scoring 24 runs in their first two games, the Orioles’ offense was nearly silent on Sunday.
Oriole starter Tyler Wells gave up four runs in his first two innings, and though he retired his last 14 batters, the Orioles had just three hits in their 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels before 20,576 at Camden Yards.
Taylor Ward hit his second home run in as many days, a two-run home run, in the first inning.
Los Angeles (2-1) scored two more runs in the second. Zach Neto had an RBI single, and the fourth run scored on a throwing error by catcher James McCann.
After the throwing error, Wells (0-1) settled down and ended up with a quality start — three earned runs in six innings, seven strikeouts without a walk.
The Orioles’ only run came in the second with one out when Jordan Westburg walked and Cedric Mullins was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Jorge Mateo beat out an infield single, and Westburg scored on Gunnar Henderson’s bases-loaded walk.
Angels starter Reid Detmers (1-0) allowed just two hits in five innings. Ryan Mountcastle singled with one out in the first.
The Orioles (2-1), who were attempting to equal the 3-0 start by the 2021 team, had a hit and a walk against Jose Soriano, who pitched three innings.
Carlos Estevez pitched the ninth for the save.
