Orioles’ Mateo in concussion protocol after getting hit in head by Mullins’ bat

BALTIMORE–Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that second baseman Jorge Mateo was in concussion protocol after he was accidentally hit in the head by Cedric Mullins’ bat when he was standing in the on-deck circle in the fourth inning. The bat hit Mateo in the back of the batting helmet he was wearing.

Mateo was removed from the game.

“We’re just waiting to see,” Hyde said after the Orioles’ 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay. “Get some more tests and see how he feels tomorrow.”

Mullins was set to lead off the inning.

“I was getting loose, looking at the pitcher and did a circle stretch, pretty normal stuff,” Mullins said. “He was right behind me. I didn’t even see him. I just saw him in the kitchen. He seems to be doing OK.”
