Orioles pitching prospect Cade Povich is heading to Toronto and joining the Orioles’ taxi squad. On Tuesday, manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that he was considering giving Kyle Bradish, whose turn to pitch was Thursday, extra rest.
If Povich starts on Thursday against the Blue Jays, it will give the Orioles six starters, at least temporarily. Dean Kremer, who’s on the 15-day injured list with a strained right triceps muscle, will probably need a rehab start or two, executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias said.
Povich, a 24-year-old left-hander who is the ninth-ranked Orioles prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has a 5-1 record with a 3.18 earned-run average in 11 starts for Triple-A Norfolk. He has struck out 75 in 56 2/3 innings and has allowed 6.7 hits per nine innings.
He was acquired by the Orioles in the trade that sent All-Star closer Jorge López to the Minnesota Twins on August 2nd, 2022, a deal that also brought Yennier Cano.
Povich will need to be added to the 40-man roster, which currently has an empty spot.
