Orioles likely to give Kremer another rehab start

BALTIMORE–Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer, who allowed five runs on five hits while retiring just two batters in Saturday night’s rehab outing for Triple-A Norfolk, is likely to get another rehab start, manager Brandon Hyde said on Monday.

Kremer, who’s on the 15-day injured list with a strained right triceps muscle, allowed five runs, three unearned, on four hits in 3 2/3 innings on June 16th in his first rehab start. He threw 59 pitches in his first start, and just 39 on Saturday against Lehigh Valley.

“We haven’t finalized it, but I would assume he’s probably going to make another rehab start,” Hyde said. “He didn’t get his [pitch count] up, didn’t get out [of] the first inning there. Wasn’t an ideal situation from a pitch count standpoint, but he did feel good after the two-thirds that he threw down there.

“We were hoping to get more out of Dean to be able to then make a decision if he’s going to come back or not. It didn’t happen. Now, we’re reassessing some things.”

Norfolk is at home this week against Charlotte.

The Orioles are eager for Kremer to return to their starting rotation. Three starting pitchers — Kyle Bradish, John Means and Tyler Wells — had season-ending elbow surgery.
