BALTIMORE—Orioles infielder Jorge Mateo, who’s on the 60-day injured list with a dislocated left elbow, still hopes to play this season but doesn’t have any news about the injury that occurred on July 23rd when he collided with shortstop Gunnar Henderson in Miami.
“Not yet, but they’re going to do another revision soon to see what’s next,” Mateo said through an interpreter. ‘They told me I needed to regain some motion so that the recovery could be quicker and also to let the inflammation go down.”
Mateo isn’t performing any baseball activities.
“I’m still waiting on the doctor. They told me surgery is a possibility,” he said. “Until we get a conclusion on that, no baseball activities.”
Mateo could be eligible to play in the final days of the regular season or the postseason.
“I don’t know yet. I think that’s something for the doctor and the team to decide,” he said. “I don’t really know anything on that front.”
Notes: First baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who left Thursday night’s game with a sore wrist, and centerfielder Cedric Mullins, who left Friday night’s game with a strained left quadriceps, aren’t in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Houston Astros. “Right now, they’re both getting treatment,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “I’m not sure if they’re going to be available to be off the bench or not. It’s still early. Both of them are a little bit better today.” … Second baseman Jackson Holliday, who’s hitless in 20 at-bats, isn’t in the starting lineup for the first time since he was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on July 31st. “I thought it would be good for him to relax for a bit,” Hyde said. Houston is starting left-hander Framber Valdez. “I just wanted to give him a little bit of a breather.” … Dean Kremer will start on Sunday night against the Astros.
