This is the final mailbag for the regular season. Mailbags will return after the end of the Orioles’ postseason. Thank you for your great response to the mailbag, and I know you’ll have lots of interesting questions after the playoffs.
Question: Say Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander both leave after rejecting a qualifying offer. What will the Orioles’ compensation picks look like? If Colton Cowser wins Rookie of the Year, what pick would the Orioles receive? From: Jimmy Perry
Answer: Jimmy, if Burnes and Santander reject a qualifying offer, which is likely, and sign elsewhere for a contract valued at at least $50 million, the Orioles would receive a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A. If a player signs for less than $50 million, they would receive a pick after Competitive Round B.
We’re assuming that the Orioles are a revenue-sharing recipient. If they’re not a revenue-sharing team this season, the comp pick comes after Competitive Balance Round B. We’ll find out in the next few weeks if they’re a revenue-sharing team.
If Cowser is voted Rookie of the Year, then the Orioles will receive a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick. They received one for Gunnar Henderson winning Rookie of the Year, and they were awarded the 32nd pick.
A pick before Competitive Balance Round A would be in the low-to-mid 30s depending on how many other teams and free agents fall into that category. A pick after Competitive Balance Round B would be in the low to mid-70s.
Question: With Jordan Westburg’s return, do you think Jackson Holliday will be left off the postseason roster? From: Mark Steinhorn, Columbia
Answer: Mark, I think Holliday will be on the postseason roster because he can pinch-run, and that could be valuable.
