Why did Orioles cut ties with Webb and Coulombe? | MAILBAG

SCROLL DOWN TO READ ARTICLE

Question: The release of Jacob Webb and Danny Coulombe seems nonsensical to me since they were two of the Orioles’ best relievers. I understand the desire for bullpen pitchers with minor league options, but I’m guessing this had more to do with the O’s concern over the elbow injuries both experienced this past season. What’s your view on this O’s decision? From: Glenn Fuller, Laurel

Answer: Glenn, that’s another popular question. Jeff Bieber of Columbia and Don Fazio are also curious.

The Orioles aren’t going to comment on why they declined to pick up Coulombe’s option and not tender Webb a contract, but I would agree with your assessment.

Both had elbow injuries that sent them to the injured list last season, and I think they were afraid there would be a recurrence.

It’s important to have pitchers with options, too, but I think health was behind the moves.

Question: Will the Yankees get a bonus pick for Luis Gil being on the roster and winning American League Rookie of the Year? From: Randy Mays

Answer: Randy, the Yankees won’t get a Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick. While Gil was with the Yankees on Opening Day, prospects must be listed in the Top 100 prospects in at least two of the three major rankings — MLB Pipeline, Baseball America and ESPN.

Gil was not among the Top 100 prospects while the Orioles’ Colton Cowser was.

Most weekdays, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: Rich@BaltimoreBaseball.com. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.
