Needing a fresh arm in the bullpen, the Orioles optioned right-handed pitcher Dillon Tate to Triple-A Norfolk and selected the contract of right-hander Burch Smith from Norfolk on Thursday.
Tate, who allowed a run in the ninth inning against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night, has given up six runs in his last four innings. He’s 2-1 with a 4.59 earned-run average with a save in 29 games.
The Orioles signed Smith to a minor league contract on June 27th. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two for the Tides in two games.
Smith, a 34-year-old right-hander, is 7-11 with a 5.79 ERA in 127 games with San Diego, Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Oakland and Miami. He began his career in 2013. In 2022 and 2023, he pitched in Japan and South Korea.
He was 2-0 with a 4.25 ERA in 25 games for the Marlins this season.
