Henderson will stay in Florida, and because of backdating, will be able to begin the season on April 3rd.
Jorge Mateo will remain in Florida for additional at-bats, and the Orioles hope that he’s ready to start the season. The 29-year-old infielder is recovering from Tommy John surgery last August.

Cade Povich will start for the Orioles when they play the Washington Nationals on Monday at 1:05 p.m. at Nationals Park. The 24-year-old left-hander was named the fifth starter, and he’ll start the home opener against Boston on March 31st.
Povich has a 3.07 ERA in four starts. In his most recent start, Povich threw five hitless innings against Toronto on Tuesday. The Nationals haven’t named their starter.
The game will be shown on MASN2 with Kevin Brown and Ben McDonald on the call.
What’s happened? Jackson Holliday had two hits and a walk, driving in one run, in the Orioles’ 5-5 tie with the Atlanta Braves before 7,314 at CoolToday Park on Sunday.
Holliday ends Grapefruit League play with a .333 average. He played both second and shortstop on Sunday, and manager Brandon Hyde hasn’t officially told him he’s on the team but it seems just a formality.
“Hyder came up to me and basically was telling me he didn’t know whether I was going to be playing shortstop or second base. I don’t really know if that counts,” Holliday said. “I know I’m going on the flight, so I guess I’ll find out.”
He’s been pleased with his spring training.
“If I can hit what I’ve done in spring, I would be very happy,” he said. “Happy with the low line drives, hard ground balls, double, triple, home run here or there … Looking forward to building off of the spring because I’m very happy with the results and the at-bats.”
With Henderson not starting the season on the active roster, Holliday has been playing shortstop for the past few weeks.
“I think luckily I had enough experience last year at second where if I go over to short and go back, it feels a lot more comfortable versus playing short and going over there,” Holliday said. “I don’t think you can ever say you’re exactly ready to play shortstop in the big leagues, but I think I’ve got a good kind of understanding of what needs to be done.
“Trying to make all the routine plays and let everything take care of itself. It was good to be able to play over there just in case for the last two weeks or so, and I think playing shortstop makes second base a whole lot easier, personally. So I think I’m in a good spot.”

Charlie Morton allowed three runs on five hits in two innings, and Dean Kremer struck out 10 and allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Kremer finished with a 7.27 ERA. He allowed six home runs in 17 1/3 innings.
“it’s kind of been an up-and-down spring for him. I thought his command, the fastball was real good, the split was good,” Hyde said. “That’s definitely the sharpest he’s been this spring.”
Félix Bautista struck out two and walked one, facing three batters.
Ramón Urías hit a two-run home run off Spencer Strider.
“I think our guys are ready to go,” Hyde said. “You never know what kind of injuries you’re going to have as spring training starts, and that’s just kind of part of the game and everybody’s going through it. But I feel like our guys are ready. Our pitchers are stretched out. I think we played pretty good baseball here the last few days, so ready to go.”
What’s up with? Coby Mayo was disappointed when he was optioned to minor league camp and said returning to Norfolk was a “lose-lose” proposition.
“I did see them [his quotes]. I don’t mind what he said,” Elias said. “I certainly understand he had just gotten some disappointing news and walked into a clubhouse with you guys in there. A lot of us have been there before.
“He’s very determined to get back. We’ve got a very deep position-player group right now. He’s a huge prospect. We don’t want him sitting on the end of the bench, and we thought it made sense for him to start the season in Norfolk and get some at-bats and get going. We’ll get him up here. There’s going to be a lot going on this year, and he’s going to be a big part of it.”
What’s what? Unless there’s a late change, it appears that the only rookie on the team will be 35-year-old Tomouyuki Sugano, who has 12 years of experience pitching in Japan.
What’s the word? “We’re going to try to get him out there as soon as possible. Obviously, I’m very hopeful that the IL stint will be measured in days instead of weeks, but I don’t have a crystal ball. But he’s doing well and it’s a matter of getting him prepared for the season, getting him at-bats, measuring his recovery.”-Elias on Henderson
What’s the number? .321/1.071 Carlson was optioned to minor league despite excellent numbers this spring. He hit .321 with a 1.071 OPS, two home runs and nine RBIs.
What’s the record? 13-14-2. The Orioles play the Washington Nationals on Monday at 1:05 p.m.
