What happened? Zach Eflin pitched six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits, throwing 73 pitches before leaving the game with right shoulder fatigue.

The Orioles’ 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Monday night was perhaps the team’s most complete game of the season.

Gunnar Henderson had two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases in his fourth start, but Eflin leaving the game early spoiled the win.

“We’re going to get some tests done, and hopefully keep our fingers crossed that everything’s OK there because he was absolutely cruising, so efficient and moving the ball to both sides of the plate,” manager Brandon Hyde told reporters in Phoenix. “We’re hoping for the best tomorrow. I saw the velo go down a little bit there in the sixth, and after the sixth, he said something. It’s unfortunate. He was throwing the ball so well.”

Eflin was on the 15-day injured list last August with right shoulder inflammation.

The Orioles (5-6) had lost four of their previous five. They got off to a strong start when Ryan O’Hearn hit his first home run of the season in the first against Zac Gallen (1-2).

Henderson, who missed the first seven games of the season with a strained right intercostal muscle, doubled to start the third and scored on Adley Rutschman’s single.

The Orioles scored three runs in the fifth. Henderson, who led off the inning with a single, scored on a fielder’s choice by Cedric Mullins. Ryan Mountcastle’s two-run single gave the Orioles a 5-1 lead.

“We were just trying to get him over the middle of the plate,” Mountcastle said of Gallen on the postgame show. “He’s really good, nibbling around the edges and today I feel like we locked it in in the zone.”

Lourdes Gurriel’s sacrifice fly in the third scored Pavin Smith with Arizona’s only run.

Yennier Cano and Gregory Soto pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.

In his third appearance of the season, Félix Bautista pitched a spotless ninth, retiring Arizona on just 11 pitches.

“When you finish the game with Cano, Soto and Félix, you’re doing something right,” Eflin told reporters in Phoenix. “Those guys are absolutely electric, and they’re a lot of fun to watch. They showed it tonight.”

What does Eflin think? Eflin said that his early exit was “just precautionary. We’ll evaluate it tomorrow after I see how I feel after sleeping tonight … I’m pretty optimistic, but we’ll see how it feels tomorrow.”

Eflin struck out one, hit a batter, but didn’t walk any.

“I could care less about swings-and-miss,” he said. “I was getting early contact when I was throwing strikes and getting ahead of guys. That’s what’s going to get me deep into the game, but there are obviously certain situations where you need strikeouts. I’m fully prepared for those, but I’m not a strikeout chaser, I’m an out chaser.

“I think it was a mix of not having the best curveball today and knowing that was probably what I was going to go to, but that’s the fun part of this game. Not only are we out there competing, but it’s a game of chess as well. You’ve got to make adjustments, and thankfully I have seven pitches. I’m able to pivot if I need to. It was a fun day.”

Eflin is being cautious.

“We won, 5-1, played great defense, had a great defensive game, Adley called a great game,” Eflin said. “It was a good day at the yard. Unfortunately had a little bit of fatigue, but we’ll see how it feels tomorrow.”

Why was the offense effective? Henderson was just 1-for-13 in his first three games in Kansas City.

“It looked like he was getting his timing back and took some really good swings today,” Hyde said. “I just thought our at-bats the first five innings were absolutely fantastic off Gallen. That’s some of our best at-bats of the year, just how patient we were, how we didn’t chase … guys put it in play tonight. We want to sleep a little bit after the fifth.”

Henderson had just six at-bats in Grapefruit League games before his February 27th injury, and got simulated at-bats in Sarasota and five games for Norfolk.

“Timing was pretty good,” Henderson told reporters in Phoenix. “Obviously, you don’t get the major league reps until you’re actually here … The injury was never bugging me. It was just a matter of getting the timing down and getting my feet up under me.”

Mountcastle credited a good team approach.

“Just good at-bats, stringing good at-bats together,” Mountcastle said. “Today we did that, and it resulted in a win.”

What’s the latest on Albert Suárez? After the Orioles announced they had acquired 28-year-old left-hander Grant Wolfram from Milwaukee for outfielder Daz Cameron and cash considerations, they optioned Wolfram to Triple-A Norfolk and transferred relief pitcher Albert Suárez from the 15-day to 60-day injured list.

Suárez, who had originally been diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation when he went on the injured list is suffering from a right subscapularis strain. It’s the largest and strongest muscle in the rotator cuff.

Hyde told reporters in Phoenix that Suárez’s injury is “going to be months, so hopefully just a few months.”

The 35-year-old right-hander allowed two runs, one unearned, on five hits in 2 2/3 innings on March 28th in his only appearance of the season.

What does it mean? Eflin pitched very well, and the Orioles’ offense beat one of baseball’s best pitchers. It was their most impressive win of the season. They’re hoping Eflin’s shoulder is OK.

What’s the word? “We’re dodging and weaving. We’ll find out tomorrow. I’m not really sure, yet.”-Hyde on Eflin’s condition.

What’s the stat of the day? 0. The Orioles haven’t recorded a save in the first 11 games of the season. In 2002, they didn’t record one for the first 12 games.

What’s going on in the minor leagues? The Orioles’ minor leagues affiliates were off on Monday.

What’s next? Charlie Morton (0-2, 9.72) will face Merrill Kelly (1-1, 10.00) on Tuesday night at 9:40.
