Ex-Oriole report: Looking at the departed 2017 Orioles at the midway point

THE KOREAN/INDEPENDENT LEAGUERS

Overseas in the Korean Baseball Organization, three 2017 Orioles are finding mixed results. The two most successful are teammates with the LG Twins: outfielder Hyun Soo Kim and right-hander Tyler Wilson.

Kim, a seasoned veteran of the KBO, hasn’t missed a beat at the plate since his two-year excursion to the States in 2016-2017. He leads all Twins’ regulars in average (.361), OBP (.423), SLG (.599), home runs (16) and RBIs (81).

On the mound, Wilson has been a mainstay in LG’s rotation, going 8-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 19 starts. He and righty Henry Sosa (who appeared with the Houston Astros in 2011) are the only pitchers on the Twins with MLB experience.

Meanwhile, righty Logan Verrett has been less effective pitching for the NC Dinos. He’s struggled to a 3-6 record and 5.38 ERA in 16 starts. Only four of his outings have been quality starts.

Jumping back stateside, in the independent Atlantic League, 2017 Orioles’ three-gamer David Washington is toiling for the Long Island Ducks, where he’s hitting .218 with a .712 OPS, nine homers and 32 RBIs in 59 games. Among his Ducks’ teammates are two other ex-Orioles: failed 2015 right fielder Travis Snider, who’s hitting .280 with 10 homers, and 41-year-old outfielder Lew Ford, who’s batting .280 with five homers. Ford last played in the majors in 2012, his lone year with the Orioles.
