Ex-Oriole report: Looking at the departed 2017 Orioles at the midway point

THE JOBLESS

As I discussed in my last installment, 2017 Orioles’ infielder Paul Janish retired to coach at Rice University. Three other veterans from last year’s squad — J.J. Hardy, Ubaldo Jimenez and Seth Smith — haven’t been signed by any MLB clubs and are likely all but retired.

Since April, three more 2017 Orioles have joined them on the unemployment line.

Righty Stefan Crichton, whom the Orioles designated for assignment on Opening Day, was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 23. He was blistered for a 10.13 ERA at Triple-A Reno, giving up 18 runs in 16 innings during his 14 games.

Infielder Johnny Giavotella has been released twice this year, first by the Miami Marlins on May 2 and then by the White Sox on June 22. Across his minor league stints this season, he’d batted .218 with a .550 OPS — a far cry from the impressive .306 average and .809 OPS he posted in the Orioles’ system for Triple-A Norfolk last season.

The newest addition to the list is lefty Jayson Aquino, who made four appearances (two starts) for the Orioles in 2017. He started this year at Norfolk, but was demoted to Double-A Bowie after four games. He struggled so badly with the Baysox — a 5.59 ERA in eight games — that the Orioles released him June 29. He hasn’t found a new home yet.
