We’re in store for a fun high school baseball season if players throughout the Baltimore area put up numbers like they did last week.
Balls were jumping off the bats Monday through Friday, especially from our three Prep Ballplayer of the Week candidates.
Each candidate hit a grand slam — two of whom had multi-homer weeks. Two of the three players also had success on the mound.

Derrick Booker, Sr., OF, Archbishop Curley
The Friars’ outfielder knocked in almost a third of the team’s 31 combined runs on Monday and Wednesday that resulted in wins over St. Paul’s (21-3) and Archbishop Spalding (10-3), respectively. Booker had two hits, one a home run, and four RBIs during Curley’s first game of the week. That success continued two days later when he hit a solo shot and a grand slam — adding five more RBIs to his weekly total. He also scored six runs.
Will Jones, Sr., RHP/INF, Catonsville
Four games in five days didn’t faze Jones last week. The senior had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs in the Comets’ 14-4 win Monday over Randallstown. He added a double in the team’s 9-8 loss to Hereford Tuesday before blasting a grand slam versus Sparrows Point two days later — he was walked in his next three plate appearances. The right-hander also pitched that Thursday, shutting out the Pointers in five innings of work. Jones gave up two hits and struck out seven in the victory. He wrapped up the week on Friday at Winters Mill with two singles, a home run and two RBIs.
Colin Ostenso, Sr., RHP/INF, Key
Ostenso had a big game Wednesday against St. Frances, in which Key blanked the Panthers, 29-0. The right-hander threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. He knocked in seven runs, hitting a grand slam and a double. Two days earlier, Ostenso had Key’s lone RBI in a 5-1 loss to Sts. Peter and Paul.
Others considered (listed alphabetically): Alex Baily, Fallston; Cory Blohm, Archbishop Spalding; Jordan Cann, Indian Creek; Kavi Caster, South River; Carson Lowman, North County; Austin Massey, Liberty; Benji Thalheimer, Atholton.
