The 2019 high school baseball season wrapped up Friday and Saturday with the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association state title games at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.

Old Mill and Sherwood kicked things off Friday evening in Class 4A. The Patriots tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh — Sherwood scored three runs in its first at-bat — before earning a walk off win in the ninth. Old Mill now has four championships.

Colonel Richardson used a six-run top of ninth Saturday afternoon to capture its second Class 1A title in two appearance. The Colonels and McDonough were scoreless up until that point.

Same stage, different result for La Plata on Saturday evening. The Warriors fell to Century in the 2018 Class 2A state title game but this year, they came out on top with a 4-2 win over Middletown, who was crowned champion in 2017. La Plata now has three titles.

James M. Bennett added another championship Saturday night with a 5-3 Class 3A win over C. Milton Wright. The Clippers now have four titles.

Now, getting to our final Prep Ballplayer of the Week vote.

The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association ‘A’ and ‘B’ Conference finals, and the public school state semis and title games (see above) were played last week. So, there was some good baseball to choose from. Here’s a look at the finalists:

Reece Early, Sr., RHP, Gerstell

Early kept the Falcons alive last Monday versus Boys’ Latin in the ‘B’ Conference finals. The senior allowed three unearned runs and struck out 12 hitters in a complete-game victory over the Lakers, 6-3. He also had two hits, including a home run, at the plate, an RBI and a run scored. On Tuesday, Early had two hits and scored a run en route to Gerstell’s 6-4 win and its first championship.

Pete Marchineck, Sr. LHP, Calvert Hall

Marchineck was a big part of Calvert Hall’s 4-2 win on May 20 versus Gilman that earned the program its first ‘A’ Conference title since 2013. The southpaw allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched. At the plate, he had a single, home run, an RBI and a run scored.

Zach Stiars, Jr., C. Milton Wright

Stiars knocked in three of C. Milton Wright’s four runs in a victory Tuesday over Northern-Calvert in a state semifinal game. The junior added three hits and an RBI in the Mustangs’ 5-2 loss against James M. Bennett in the Class 3A title game.
